That’s where we at NL Active comes in.

From 24 October to 1 November, our centres across North Lincolnshire will be packed with ways for children and young people to get active, have fun and make the most of their time off.

Building healthy habits for life with NL Active Junior Gym

Comments Off on Building healthy habits for life with NL Active Junior Gym

Helping young people feel confident, stay active and develop healthy habits can make a real difference to their health and wellbeing, both now and in the future. Our Junior Gym sessions give 11 to 16 year olds the opportunity to discover the benefits of exercise, learn how to use gym equipment safely and find activities they enjoy in a supportive supervised environment.

Why being active matters

According to Sport England’s latest Active Lives Children and Young People Survey for 2024-25, 49.1% of children and young people in England are meeting the recommended activity levels, taking part in an average of at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day across the week. However, 28.4% are classed as less active, doing less than an average of 30 minutes a day.

These figures highlight the importance of helping young people find enjoyable ways to move more and build activity into their everyday lives.

Regular physical activity can support healthy growth and development, strengthen muscles and bones, improve cardiovascular fitness and help young people develop coordination and agility. It can also support mental wellbeing, helping to improve mood, relieve stress and provide a positive outlet away from the pressures of everyday life.

But the benefits go beyond physical fitness. Sport England research found that children and young people who are more active report being happier, with an average score of 7.1 out of 10 and compared with 6.7 among those less active.

Physical activity may also offer benefits beyond the gym, research suggests that being active can support children’s learning and academic performance, alongside their physical and mental wellbeing. Helping young people develop an enjoyable, sustainable approach to exercise can therefore be a valuable investment in their overall development.

Just as importantly, introducing exercise at a young age can help establish healthy habits that continue onto adulthood. Giving young people the knowledge and confidence to exercise independently can help them feel more comfortable staying active as they get older.

Building confidence, one session at a time

For some young people, stepping into a gym for the first time can feel daunting. Knowing how to use the equipment, which exercises to try and how to put a workout together can be a challenge, particularly without previous experience.

That’s where NL Active Junior Gym can help!

These sessions are designed for 11 to 16 year olds and are supervised by our Health & Fitness Assistants, who provide support and guidance while young people explore a range of gym exercises. With an emphasis on having fun and keeping fit, Junior Gym offers an opportunity to learn skills, build confidence and discover different ways to exercise.

Learning how to use gym equipment correctly can also help young people understand the importance of exercising safely, developing good technique and working at a pace that suits them.

Whether they want to improve their fitness, get stronger or simply try something new, Junior Gym helps young people take their first steps towards a more active lifestyle.

Get started! Junior Gym Induction Course

All new Junior Gym customers must complete the four session induction course, led by our qualified fitness instructors before joining regular junior gym sessions.

Each session introduces a different aspect of gym training, helping young people develop their skills and confidence progressively:

  • Session 1: Cardio machines – learn how to use treadmills, bikes and cross trainers and discover which activities they enjoy.
  • Session 2: Resistance machines: learn how to use strength training equipment safely and correctly.
  • Session 3: Functional training – try exercises using light weights, medicine balls and bodyweight movements.
  • Session 4: A personalised gym plan – bring everything together with a simple programme tailored to their interests and goals.

Ready to get started? Our four week induction course costs £30, payable when you book. Call 01724 291900 or pop in to book your place.

Once completed, young people can join regular supervised Junior Gym sessions for just £5 per session. Our Junior Gym sessions are available at all NL Active gyms, with places bookable online, by phone: 01724291900, or in person at your local centre.

More face-to-face help brought into North Lincolnshire’s rural communities

Comments Off on More face-to-face help brought into North Lincolnshire’s rural communities

Residents facing financial difficulties in Barton, Brigg, Crowle, Epworth and Winterton can now get free, face-to-face advice in their own communities.

North Lincolnshire Council has chosen to invest in Citizens Advice North Lincolnshire taking weekly sessions into community hubs across the area, reducing the need for residents to travel into Scunthorpe to get help. They will be available to explain what financial help is available through the Crisis Resilience Fund for people who have suffered a financial setback.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Living outside Scunthorpe should not make it harder to get good advice when you need it.

“We have chosen to invest in taking this support directly into North Lincolnshire’s towns and rural communities, making it easier for residents to sit down with somebody locally and find a way forward.

“This is about delivering practical support close to home and ensuring communities across North Lincolnshire benefit from the services in which we invest.”

Cllr Tim Mitchell, cabinet member for finance and efficiency, said: “This investment will give residents in rural communities regular access to trusted, specialist advice without facing an unnecessary journey.

“It will help people tackle problems earlier, understand their options and build greater security and resilience.”

Sessions are available at:

  • Barton Community Hub: Mondays, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Brigg Community Hub: Fridays, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Crowle Community Hub: Thursdays, 9.30am to 12.30pm
  • Epworth Community Hub: Thursdays, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Winterton Community Hub: Mondays, 9.30am to 12.30pm
  • Ashby Community Hub: Tuesdays, 9.30am to 12.30pm
  • Scunthorpe Central: Fridays, 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm

The additional support forms part of the council’s Community Resilience Fund programme.

Winterton roads next as council pushes on with resurfacing work

Comments Off on Winterton roads next as council pushes on with resurfacing work

Large parts of Winterton streets will be resurfaced this autumn as the council continues work to improve roads across North Lincolnshire.

Crews are due to start on King Street, Park Street, Hart Lane and Mill House Lane on Monday 19 October, with work scheduled for completion by Friday 6 November.

Alongside the new road surfaces, they will replace kerbs where needed, adjust drains and drain covers and put road markings back in place.

The work follows improvements completed in 30 towns and villages across North Lincolnshire. The council has also filled more than 18,000 potholes, tackling smaller defects alongside more extensive work like the resurfacing planned for Winterton.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Whether it’s a pothole outside someone’s home or a street that needs a new surface, people want to see the work getting done.

“We’ve improved roads across 30 communities and filled more than 18,000 potholes. Now we’re moving ahead with a substantial programme on four streets in Winterton, because keeping the roads people rely on in good condition matters.”

Work has been completed in Ashby, Barrow, Barton, Belton, Bonby, Bottesford, Broughton, Burringham, Burton, East Halton, Epworth, Flixborough, Fockerby, Garthorpe, Gunness, Haxey, Hibaldstow, Holme, Kirmington, Kirton, Melton Ross, Messingham, Roxby, Scunthorpe, Thornton Curtis, Winterton, Wootton, Worlaby and Wrawby.

Cllr Elaine Marper, Winterton ward councillor and cabinet member for customer services, said: “King Street, Park Street, Hart Lane and Mill House Lane are used every day by people living and working in Winterton. I know road condition is something residents notice, so it’s good to see these streets included in the programme.

“There will be some disruption while the crews are working, and we’ll make sure people have the details they need before work starts.

“Once it’s finished, residents will have smoother roads that are better to use – and we’ll be moving on to the rest of the roads that need sorting in Winterton – they are coming soon.”

No young person left behind: Council leader strengthens support into work and training

Comments Off on No young person left behind: Council leader strengthens support into work and training

Every young person in North Lincolnshire deserves the opportunity to build a successful future – and North Lincolnshire Council is set to strengthen the help available.

The plans would bring together schools, colleges, employers, the Department for Work and Pensions, health partners and the voluntary sector to ensure young people receive the right support at the right time.

They build on a strong local track record. While nationally around four per cent of 16 and 17-year-olds are not in education, employment or training, in North Lincolnshire that figure is less than two per cent.

The council now wants to go further by strengthening partnership working and expanding the support available to young people.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is a personal priority for me. Every young person deserves the chance to succeed, and we are determined that nobody slips through the net.

“National policies have made it harder for businesses to employ people, particularly young people. That makes it even more important that we step up locally, create opportunities and ensure no young person is left behind.

“We already have a strong network of schools, colleges, employers and organisations supporting young people every day. We are choosing to invest further in those partnerships, making sure organisations work more closely together so that young people receive the support they need as early as possible.

“Whether that’s an apprenticeship, further education, training or a first job, we want every young person to know there is an opportunity for them and people ready to help them take that next step.”

The details are set out in a report due to be discussed by the Cabinet. The plans build on North Lincolnshire’s Youth Hub, which has supported almost 1,000 young people over the past five years, helping hundreds into paid employment while many others have progressed into apprenticeships, training, work experience and further learning.

The proposals also include a new intensive programme for young people not in education, employment or training, alongside expanded employability workshops, work experience placements, careers events and sector-based training.

If approved, they will strengthen partnership working to identify young people who need support earlier, remove barriers to opportunity and help more young people move into education, training or employment across North Lincolnshire.

Cllr Waltham added: “Success will be measured by one thing – more young people fulfilling their potential, more local businesses finding the skilled workforce they need and fewer young people left behind.”

If you’re a parent, carer, grandparent or young person looking for help with education, training or employment, visit your local Community Hub in Ashby, Barton-upon-Humber, Brigg, Crowle, Epworth or Scunthorpe. Friendly staff can offer advice, answer questions and help you access the right support.

Comments Off on Step into summer: Hundreds of free walks helping residents discover North Lincolnshire this summer

From riverside trails and woodland paths to gentle strolls through parks and nature reserves, hundreds of opportunities are being offered this summer to help people get active, improve their wellbeing and discover more of North Lincolnshire.

The new Walking North Lincolnshire summer programme features dozens of free led walks taking place across towns, villages and beauty spots throughout June, July and August, with routes designed for all ages and abilities.

Whether people are looking for a gentle one-mile accessible walk, a social walk with friends, a longer five-mile trail route or even Nordic walking, there is something for everyone.

The programme takes in locations across the whole of North Lincolnshire, including Barton-upon-Humber, Winterton, Epworth, Brigg, Alkborough, Goxhill, Belton, Wrawby, South Ferriby, Haxey, Scotton and Scunthorpe.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Sometimes the best things are right on your doorstep. These walks are a fantastic way to get out, get active, meet new people and explore parts of North Lincolnshire you may never have visited before.

“Walking is one of the simplest ways to improve your health and wellbeing, but it is also about enjoying our countryside, our parks and our communities. Whether you are taking your first steps towards being more active or already enjoy regular walks, there is something in this programme for you.”

Alongside the led walks programme, residents can also take part in a wide range of community wellbeing activities, including walking football, walking cricket, strength and balance sessions, social groups, parent and pushchair walks and low-impact exercise classes.

Cllr Christine Patterson, cabinet member for healthy communities, said: “We want North Lincolnshire to be a place where people can live healthy, active and independent lives. Programmes like this help people improve their physical health, boost their mental wellbeing and make new connections within their communities.

“The fact that so many activities are free or low cost means more people can take part and benefit.”

No booking is required for the led walks – residents can simply turn up and join in. Full details of all walks and activities are available through Walking North Lincolnshire and LiveWell North Lincolnshire.
